Uganda is set to begin a 42-day countdown toward being declared free of Ebola after discharging its last confirmed patient from treatment, health authorities announced. The milestone marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to bring the latest outbreak under control.

The 42-day threshold

Under international health guidelines, a country is considered Ebola-free once two full incubation periods — equivalent to 42 days — have passed without any new confirmed cases following the recovery or discharge of the last patient. The countdown officially starts once the final patient leaves care, placing Uganda on a clear, time-bound path toward official clearance.

Implications for the health system

Reaching the discharge stage does not mean the response is over. Health workers are expected to maintain heightened surveillance, continue contact tracing, and reinforce infection prevention measures in health facilities throughout the countdown period. Authorities have repeatedly stressed that vigilance is essential, as flare-ups have occurred in past outbreaks elsewhere on the continent even after the initial chain of transmission appeared broken.

A measured recovery

Uganda has experience managing Ebola outbreaks, including previous episodes involving the Sudan ebolavirus, for which no approved vaccine is yet widely available. International partners, including the World Health Organization, have supported the country with technical assistance, laboratory capacity, and case management expertise. The successful treatment and discharge of the final patient is being viewed as a reflection of that coordination between national responders and external health agencies.

Looking ahead

If no new cases are detected during the 42-day window, Uganda will be officially declared Ebola-free, formally ending the outbreak. Health officials have urged the public to remain alert, report any suspected symptoms promptly, and continue practicing preventive measures as the country moves through the final phase of the countdown.
