Man Sentenced to Death for Murder of Four Children in Kampala Kindergarten Attack

A Ugandan court has sentenced a man to death for the brutal murder of four young children at a nursery school in Kampala, in a case that has shaken the East African nation and reignited debates about child safety and judicial speed.

Christopher Okello Onyum was arrested on April 2 as he tried to flee the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Program School in Kampala, where he had fatally stabbed the children aged between two and three years old. The attack sent shockwaves through Uganda, where such violence against young children is extremely rare.

Delivering the sentence, the judge noted the extreme gravity of the crimes and said the death penalty was warranted given the vulnerability of the victims. The case moved through Uganda courts with unusual speed, a reflection of its public notoriety and pressure for swift justice.

Police said Onyum gained access to the daycare facility by posing as a parent, allowing him to enter without arousing suspicion. He then attacked the children with a knife before staff could intervene.

Child welfare organizations in Uganda have called for reviews of security protocols at schools and daycare centres following the attack. The Ministry of Education announced it would work with security agencies to develop minimum safety standards for early childhood development centres.

Uganda maintains the death penalty for murder, though capital sentences have been infrequently carried out in recent years. Human rights groups have criticized the speed of the trial, arguing that proper legal review requires more time.

The attack has dominated Ugandan media for weeks, with President Yoweri Museveni publicly condemning the violence and directing security agencies to intensify checks on schools and childcare facilities across the country.
