The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a public warning to Nigerians applying for US visas and passports, advising them against submitting photographs that have been edited or manipulated using artificial intelligence tools.

These long-standing standards cover dimensions, lighting, background colour, head position and facial expression, and typically require a plain white or off-white background with the applicant’s full face clearly visible.

The advisory reflects growing concern among immigration authorities worldwide about the accessibility of generative AI tools, which can smooth skin, reshape facial features or swap backgrounds with relatively little technical expertise. Standard photo-editing adjustments, such as minor cropping or colour correction, are usually permitted, but more sophisticated digital alterations can trigger rejection at the verification stage. Applicants whose photographs are deemed non-compliant are typically asked to resubmit, which can delay the scheduling of their visa interview.
Application procedures in Nigeria
The US Mission in Nigeria operates the embassy in Abuja and a consulate in Lagos, both of which handle non-immigrant visa applications. Applicants are required to upload a digital photograph as part of the online application and to bring a matching printed copy to their in-person interview. Similar photo rules generally apply to US passport renewals processed abroad.
The embassy has urged prospective applicants to follow the Department of State’s published photo guidelines closely and to submit only unaltered, current images of themselves, in order to avoid refusal or unnecessary delays in processing.
