Mercy Ships Returns to Ghana with Its Largest Hospital Vessel
The humanitarian organization Mercy Ships has returned to Ghana with its largest hospital ship, the Global Mercy, marking the latest deployment of a charity that has been delivering free surgical and medical care to West African nations for more than three decades, according to The Maritime Executive.
Founded in 1978 and based in the United States, Mercy Ships operates a small fleet of vessels converted into floating hospitals, staffed by volunteer surgeons, dentists, nurses and other medical professionals. The charity has worked in more than a dozen African countries, focusing on surgeries that are difficult or impossible to access in low-income settings, including maxillofacial procedures, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and reconstructive plastic surgery.
The Global Mercy, which entered service in 2022, is the organisation’s flagship and has been described by the charity as the world’s largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship. It complements the older Africa Mercy, which has been in service since 2007 and has served as the backbone of the fleet across multiple African deployments.
Ghana has hosted Mercy Ships on several previous occasions, with extended field services based at the port of Tema. The country’s Ministry of Health has historically partnered with the charity to identify patients in need of specialist surgery and to coordinate follow-up care after the vessel departs. Past collaborations have also included training programmes for local surgeons, anaesthetists and biomedical technicians.
The latest return to Ghana comes as the charity continues to expand its training footprint alongside direct surgical work, with onboard and dockside programmes aimed at strengthening national healthcare capacity rather than only delivering short-term interventions, as The Maritime Executive reported.
