What Happened
The outbreak occurred aboard a cruise vessel operating in the Atlantic Ocean. Within days, three passengers had died and at least three others were seriously ill, prompting immediate concern from port authorities in Cape Verde, who refused permission for the ship to dock over public health fears.
The vessel remained in open waters close to shore while medical teams boarded repeatedly to assess patients and provide treatment. Authorities are now planning medical evacuations to transfer the most critical cases via ambulance and air.

Foster Mohale, spokesperson for South Africa’s Health Ministry, called on individuals who may have been in close contact with affected passengers to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.
