Drones have targeted Khartoum airport in a fresh escalation of violence that has deepened regional tensions, with Sudan’s government publicly alleging Ethiopian involvement in the attack, a claim Ethiopia has firmly denied.
The strike targeted the airport infrastructure in the Sudanese capital, marking the second such attack in a week and following months of relative calm after government forces regained control of the city. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the expanding geography of the Sudan conflict and the involvement of neighbouring states.
Sudan’s Allegation
Sudan’s authorities said the drones originated from Ethiopian territory and accused Addis Ababa of direct involvement in supporting armed operations against Sudanese state interests. The allegation has added a new layer of complexity to an already volatile situation in the Horn of Africa.
Ethiopia rejected the accusation outright, calling it false and irresponsible and warning that such claims could be used to justify further militarisation of the region. Ethiopian officials insisted their forces had no involvement in the incident and called for restraint.
Escalating Regional Tensions
The attack comes amid heightened competition between Sudan and Ethiopia over boundary issues, water rights, and influence in contested border regions. The two countries have been at odds over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the status of disputed territories along their shared frontier.
Regional analysts warn that the incident could trigger a dangerous cycle of retaliation and counter-accusation, potentially drawing other powers into a broader confrontation.
International Response
The African Union and the United Nations have called for an independent investigation into the incident, urging both sides to avoid actions that could further destabilise the region. Neighbouring countries including Egypt and South Sudan have expressed concern about the prospect of a wider conflict.
For now, the immediate priority for Sudanese authorities is repairing airport infrastructure and ensuring the safety of civilian personnel at the facility.
