The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 4,000 cases, according to France 24, marking a grim new milestone in one of the most serious epidemics of the disease ever recorded.
In a broadcast segment, the French news channel reported that the fast-growing outbreak had crossed the 4,000-case threshold, underscoring the persistent difficulties facing response teams operating in the country’s troubled eastern regions.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Ebola virus was first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in what was then Zaire, has experienced more outbreaks of the disease than any other country. The current epidemic has proven particularly difficult to contain due to ongoing insecurity in eastern DRC, where armed groups are active and where community mistrust of medical responders has at times disrupted vaccination campaigns and safe burial practices.
A long history with the virus
The country has recorded more than a dozen distinct Ebola outbreaks since the virus’s discovery. Health workers and international organisations, including the World Health Organization and Médecins Sans Frontières, have repeatedly mobilised to contain the disease, which causes severe bleeding, organ failure and, in many cases, death. An experimental vaccine developed in recent years has been deployed in past outbreaks with considerable success in protecting contacts of confirmed patients.
Response efforts in eastern DRC have long been complicated by insecurity and attacks on health workers. The region hosts large numbers of internally displaced people, complicating surveillance and contact tracing. Continued international support, France 24 noted, will be essential to containing the outbreak.
