DR Congo’s Latest Ebola Outbreak Deadliest in Country’s History, Authorities Warn

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s current Ebola outbreak has become the deadliest in the country’s recorded history, surpassing the devastation of the 2018-2020 epidemic, according to AllAfrica, which cited reporting from RFI. Health authorities have also warned that the outbreak has not yet reached its peak.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has endured more Ebola outbreaks than any other country. The virus was first identified in 1976 in what was then Zaire, near the Ebola River in the country’s north — a location that gave the disease its name. Since then, the country has faced repeated flare-ups, each one testing the limits of a healthcare system weakened by decades of underfunding and, in the east, persistent armed conflict.

The 2018-2020 outbreak, concentrated in the conflict-affected North Kivu and Ituri provinces, was the largest in the country’s history prior to the current one and the second-largest globally after the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic. Its scale exposed the operational challenges of responding to a haemorrhagic fever in areas where community mistrust, insecurity and porous borders complicated containment. The toll of that epidemic made it one of the deadliest of the decade anywhere in the world.

Ebola virus disease is a severe and often fatal illness, with symptoms including fever, vomiting, internal bleeding and, in many cases, death. The introduction of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine in subsequent outbreaks has given responders a powerful tool for ring vaccination around confirmed cases, helping to limit transmission where logistics and community cooperation allow.

With authorities now warning that the present outbreak has not yet peaked, attention is once again turning to the question of how the country’s health system, and its international partners, can sustain a response that reaches every affected community before the virus spreads further.
