Cheaper locally refined petrol now outprices imports in Nigeria

Nigerians are now able to buy petrol refined domestically at a lower price than imported fuel, according to Business Insider Africa, in a development that marks a notable shift for Africa’s most populous country and its long-troubled downstream petroleum sector.

For decades, Nigeria — a major crude oil producer on the continent — has relied heavily on imported refined petroleum products, particularly petrol, despite possessing vast domestic hydrocarbon reserves. The country imported the bulk of its gasoline as the state-owned refining system faltered and private investment in domestic processing lagged. The result was a downstream sector long characterised by heavy fuel subsidy costs, foreign exchange demand, and recurring fuel scarcity.

According to Business Insider Africa, domestically refined fuel is now being sold at a lower price than imported petrol on the Nigerian market. The change is linked to the ramp-up of local refining capacity, most notably the large private refinery built by Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote, which began processing crude and rolling out petrol into the domestic market. The shift is widely viewed as a potential turning point for an industry long dominated by imports.

Industry observers note that locally refined petrol offers Nigeria an opportunity to reduce its dependence on foreign supplies, ease pressure on the naira, and lower logistics costs across the economy — from transport to manufacturing. Cheaper domestic fuel could also feed into lower production costs for goods that depend on road haulage.

The development comes as Nigeria continues to overhaul its downstream petroleum policy, including the gradual winding down of long-standing fuel subsidy arrangements.
