Why Bigger Revenue May Not Make Nigeria’s Economy Bigger
Nigeria’s economic debate often treats revenue as a starting point for growth. Yet a headline published by The Sun Nigeria, attributed to Jatto, points to a distinction that is easy to miss: more money flowing into an economy does not automatically make the economy larger, stronger, or more productive.
Revenue measures an inflow. Economic scale, by contrast, is reflected in the value and variety of goods and services produced over time. The difference matters because an increase in receipts can be temporary, concentrated, or disconnected from the activities that sustain employment and investment. A number on a financial statement cannot substitute for those underlying processes.
The outcome depends on what revenue enables. If it is used to maintain essential services, improve infrastructure, support stable institutions, and help businesses operate with confidence, it can contribute to expansion. If it is absorbed by weak execution, poor planning, or inefficient spending, the same increase may produce little lasting change. This is not an argument against revenue; it is an argument for judging its quality and use.
The same principle applies outside government. Companies with higher sales do not necessarily become more productive simply because turnover has risen. Households with greater income may increase consumption, but lasting economic progress still depends on whether that spending supports durable businesses, skills, and opportunities. In each case, the link between an inflow and national output must be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Jatto’s point, as presented by The Sun Nigeria, is therefore less about dismissing financial gains than about asking what follows them. The central test is whether revenue is converted into capabilities that allow Nigeria to produce more, compete more effectively, and withstand future shocks. Bigger receipts can open a door, but they do not build the house by themselves.
