TelOne FC Name Joel Luphahla as New Head Coach After Sacking Saul Chaminuka
TelOne FC, the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League side owned by the state telecommunications company, have appointed Joel Luphahla as their new head coach, according to New Zimbabwe reporting carried by AllAfrica. He replaces Saul Chaminuka, who was dismissed on Tuesday morning after a poor run of results.
Luphahla, a former Zimbabwe international midfielder who previously coached in the domestic top flight, takes charge of one of the country’s oldest football institutions. TelOne, based in Gweru in the Midlands Province, were founded in the colonial era and have long been associated with the national telecommunications operator that still backs the club. After years in the lower divisions, they returned to the Premier Soccer League and have since been working to establish themselves among the country’s elite sides.
Chaminuka’s departure brings an end to a turbulent spell in charge of the Midlands-based outfit. A widely travelled domestic coach, he had previously worked with several of Zimbabwe’s leading clubs, including stints at Hwange and Dynamos, as well as involvement with national team setups at various age-group levels. His tenure at TelOne had come under increasing strain in recent weeks as the club slipped down the league table.
For Luphahla, the appointment represents an opportunity to steady a side in need of direction as the season progresses. TelOne will be hoping that the change in the dugout brings a swift upturn in form as they seek to move clear of the relegation zone and reassert themselves in the top flight.
