Sudanese Army Says Air Defenses Downed Second Drone in North Kordofan
The Sudanese Armed Forces said its air defense units shot down an enemy FH-95 unmanned aerial vehicle in the Bara area of North Kordofan State on Monday, according to the state-run Sudan News Agency (SUNA), as reported by AllAfrica. It was the second drone intercepted by the Armed Forces in the area on the same day.
The announcement, made from Khartoum, did not specify which actor had launched the drone. FH-95 drones are Iranian-designed loitering munitions that have appeared in several conflicts across the Middle East and Africa, and their use in Sudan’s war has been reported by international monitors in recent years.
The interception comes amid Sudan’s ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The fighting erupted in April 2023 following the collapse of a power-sharing arrangement and has since produced one of the world’s largest displacement and hunger crises, with millions of people forced from their homes.
North Kordofan, a central Sudanese state bordering the Darfur region to the west, has been a frontline in the conflict. Bara and surrounding localities have seen repeated clashes, and the state sits astride strategic routes linking the capital region with western Sudan.
SUNA, Sudan’s official state news agency, has regularly published accounts of military operations since the war began. Independent verification of battlefield claims has remained difficult because of limited access for journalists and frequent communications blackouts across much of the country.
