Standard Bank Mozambique Posts 2.24 Billion Meticais Profit in First Half of 2026
The Mozambican subsidiary of South Africa’s Standard Bank Group reported a profit of 2.244 billion meticais, equivalent to approximately 34.7 million US dollars, in the first half of 2026, according to AllAfrica, citing the Maputo-based news agency AIM.
The figure reflects earnings from the local franchise of Africa’s largest lender by assets. Standard Bank Group has operated in Mozambique for several years, serving corporate and institutional clients and, through its retail network, individual customers across the country.
Headquartered in Johannesburg, Standard Bank has historically ranked among the most active South African banks in expanding into the wider continent, with subsidiaries or representative offices in more than a dozen African markets. Mozambique, which borders South Africa to the north and shares significant trade and investment flows with its larger neighbour, has been one of those longstanding markets for the group.
The Mozambican economy has faced sustained headwinds in recent years, including security challenges in the northern Cabo Delgado province and the aftermath of tropical cyclones that disrupted agriculture and infrastructure. Banking-sector performance across the country has nevertheless remained broadly resilient, with several institutions reporting steady earnings as digital channels expand and lending to the formal economy continues.
The metical, Mozambique’s national currency, has been relatively stable against major currencies in recent months, after a period of depreciation that had weighed on dollar-equivalent earnings reported by locally focused lenders. AIM did not provide a year-on-year comparison or further detail on the drivers behind the bank’s first-half result.
