Payaza to power payments for Lebara Nigeria in telecoms-fintech deal
Payaza, a Nigerian payment-infrastructure company, has been appointed to process payments for Lebara Nigeria, the local subsidiary of the multinational mobile operator, under a new telecoms-fintech partnership, according to Business News Nigeria.
The arrangement will see Payaza provide the payment processing backbone that supports Lebara Nigeria’s customer transactions, including the recharge, airtime, and bundled service offerings that are central to the operator’s value-positioned mobile plans. By outsourcing this layer to a specialist fintech, Lebara Nigeria joins a growing list of African telecom operators turning to local payment processors to handle the variety of mobile-money flows that now run through their networks.
Payaza builds payment-processing infrastructure used by businesses across Nigeria and other African markets, allowing merchants and service providers to accept cards, bank transfers, and mobile-money transfers through a single integration. The company is part of a wider Nigerian fintech ecosystem that has, over the past decade, become one of the continent’s most active hubs for payment innovation, with Lagos-based firms attracting both regional and international clients.
Lebara, headquartered in London, operates mobile virtual network operator services in several countries and is known for affordable international calling and tariffs aimed at migrant communities and cost-conscious consumers. Its Nigerian operation extends the brand into Africa’s largest mobile market, where competition among operators and mobile-money providers has intensified as smartphone penetration deepens.
As Business News Nigeria reported, the partnership reflects a broader pattern in which telecom operators and fintechs converge: telecoms bring subscriber reach and distribution, while fintechs bring the technical rails for digital payments, identity verification, and settlement. The terms of the Payaza-Lebara deal were not disclosed in the report.
