Nigerian soldiers deployed under Operation Fansan Yamma rescued nine civilians, including an infant, after disrupting an attempted mass abduction by terrorists in Unguwar Rogo Village, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, according to AllAfrica, citing a Vanguard report.

The operation is part of ongoing military efforts to curb the wave of armed banditry and terrorist activity that has plagued Zamfara and neighbouring states in Nigeria’s northwest. Troops responded to intelligence indicating a planned abduction attempt by the terrorist group, allowing them to intervene before the civilians could be taken, according to the report.

Zamfara has long been one of the epicentres of Nigeria’s security challenges in the northwest, where armed groups have carried out repeated attacks, kidnappings and killings across rural communities. Mass abductions of villagers, particularly women and children, have become a recurring tactic used by criminal gangs operating in the region, often for ransom.

Operation Fansan Yamma was launched as part of a broader military push to dismantle the armed networks responsible for the violence, complementing other counter-insurgency efforts in other parts of the country. The operation has involved coordinated ground actions aimed at disrupting the bandits and terrorist cells that have asserted control over large swathes of rural territory in the northwest.

The rescue of the nine civilians in Kaura Namoda adds to a series of recent operations in which Nigerian forces have intercepted abduction attempts and recovered hostages. Zamfara authorities and community leaders have repeatedly called for sustained military presence and improved intelligence cooperation to protect vulnerable villages from armed groups, underscoring the continued security pressures facing the state.
