A formal rejection, though rare in the case of Nigeria, can become a significant diplomatic signal, sometimes reflecting tensions or policy disagreements between the two capitals.

Nigeria maintains one of the largest diplomatic networks in Africa, with missions spread across most regions of the world. The country’s foreign policy tradition, established after independence in 1960, has emphasised non-alignment, African solidarity, and engagement with both Western and non-Western partners.
