Kenya: Food Safety Fears Emerge After 15 Elephants Die in Amboseli

The Kenya Veterinary Association (KVA) has called on the government to launch a multi-agency investigation into the suspected cyanide poisoning that killed 15 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem, warning that the incident raises concerns beyond wildlife and may signal risks to the country’s food supply, according to AllAfrica, citing Capital FM.

The Amboseli ecosystem, which straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, is one of East Africa’s most important wildlife sanctuaries. It supports one of the continent’s most closely studied elephant populations and is a cornerstone of Kenya’s tourism industry, drawing visitors from around the world to observe large herds against the mountain’s iconic backdrop. The park and its surrounding dispersal areas are managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service in coordination with community conservancies and neighbouring Tanzanian authorities.

Poisoning has emerged as one of the more troubling threats to Kenya’s wildlife in recent years. Because toxins can be deployed covertly and decimate multiple animals at once, conservation groups have documented repeated incidents involving elephants, vultures and other scavengers. Carcasses laced with poison are sometimes used in retaliation for crop raiding or to target animals for ivory without drawing attention, and the collateral damage to non-target species can be severe.

By raising the prospect of contamination reaching the human food chain, the KVA’s appeal broadens the usual framing of such incidents from a conservation problem to a public health issue. The association has urged coordination between veterinary, wildlife, agricultural and public health agencies to determine the source of the suspected poison and to assess any wider exposure risks.

Amboseli’s elephants have long been central to scientific research on elephant behaviour, family structure and longevity. The loss of 15 animals in a single event would represent a significant blow to that population and to the communities whose livelihoods depend on wildlife tourism in the region.
