Jetour Nigeria has launched the Rely R8, a sport utility vehicle marketed for drivers who regularly travel on rough or unpaved roads, according to Punch Newspapers. The Chinese-linked brand is positioning the model as a rugged alternative for motorists who need higher ground clearance and off-road capability.

The Rely R8 enters a segment of the Nigerian market where high-clearance, four-wheel-drive vehicles have long appealed to private buyers, businesses, and security-conscious motorists who regularly negotiate poor road conditions outside major cities. Punch Newspapers reported that the vehicle is being marketed specifically for tough terrains, fitting it into a wider category of SUVs that emphasise durability and rough-road performance.

A Chinese brand expanding in Africa

Jetour is a sub-brand of Chery Automobile, one of China’s largest privately owned carmakers, and the wider Chery group has been steadily expanding its presence across Africa. Nigeria, the continent’s most populous country and one of its largest vehicle markets, has become a focal point for several Chinese manufacturers seeking to compete with established Japanese, Korean and European marques.

The Nigerian new-vehicle market has historically been shaped by imports, with used vehicles from Asia and Europe dominating the streets of Lagos, Abuja and other major cities. In recent years, however, formal dealerships for Chinese brands including Jetour, GAC and Hongqi have opened showrooms offering factory-fresh vehicles with manufacturer warranties.

Targeting the rough-road segment

By emphasising off-road capability, Jetour Nigeria is courting buyers who frequently travel between cities, into rural areas or along the country’s many unpaved routes. The approach reflects a broader industry trend of manufacturers marketing SUVs as utility vehicles suited to African driving conditions rather than purely urban transport.

Details about pricing, specifications and nationwide availability were not disclosed in the Punch Newspapers report. The launch nonetheless adds another option for Nigerian consumers weighing a new SUV against the more established rivals that have traditionally dominated the segment.
