Epiroc, the Swedish mining and infrastructure equipment manufacturer, is expanding its aftermarket offering in South Africa, according to International Mining. The move comes as mining companies in the country continue to seek reliable spare parts, maintenance and technical support to keep equipment running and limit unplanned downtime.

A long-established presence

Epiroc, headquartered in Nacka near Stockholm, was spun off from Atlas Copco in 2018 and supplies drill rigs, loaders, trucks and rock-drilling tools as well as a broad range of aftermarket services to mining customers worldwide. The company has maintained a presence in South Africa for several decades, serving operators in the country’s deep-level gold, platinum, coal and diamond mines.

South Africa’s mining sector

South Africa remains one of the world’s largest mining jurisdictions. The country is a leading producer of platinum group metals, chromium, manganese and vanadium, and also produces significant quantities of gold, coal, iron ore and diamonds. Mining has historically been a cornerstone of the South African economy, though the sector has faced sustained challenges in recent years, including rising input costs, electricity supply constraints and fluctuating commodity prices.

Growing importance of aftermarket services

Aftermarket services, including spare parts, component repair, preventive maintenance and technical support, have become an increasingly important source of revenue for original equipment manufacturers serving the mining industry. As equipment fleets age and utilisation rates climb, operators depend on rapid access to parts and qualified service technicians to maintain production. The expansion of Epiroc’s aftermarket offering is intended to strengthen that support network for customers across South Africa, as reported by International Mining.
