Calls Mount for Overhaul of Nigeria Football Federation
The Nigeria Football Federation, the governing body overseeing the country’s most popular sport, is once again at the centre of calls for sweeping administrative reform. The NFF oversees the activities of the Super Eagles, the senior men’s national team, as well as the women’s national teams, the domestic league and grassroots football development across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Nigeria remains one of Africa’s football powerhouses, having won the Africa Cup of Nations three times and qualified for six FIFA World Cups, but performances have faltered in recent tournaments, and critics say administrative instability is a major cause.
The federation has long been plagued by internal wrangling, court cases over leadership legitimacy, and tensions with the federal government. They contend that decisive restructuring of the federation’s leadership and governance framework is essential if Nigeria is to remain competitive on the continental and global stage.
