Ouagadougou, May 6, 2026 — Burkina Faso’s military junta has suspended more than 200 civil society organizations in what civil liberties groups are calling the most sweeping crackdown on independent civic space since the coup that brought Captain Ibrahim Traoré to power in 2022.
The suspensions, announced late Monday by the transitional government, affect 205 organizations spanning health, education, women’s rights, farming cooperatives, and community development.
Scope of the Crackdown
The affected organizations include dozens of local health NGOs that have been critical in delivering care to communities in the Sahel region, many of them funded by international donors.
International Concern
The international community has grown increasingly alarmed. The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights issued a statement expressing deep concern over the mass suspensions.
