Brazilian firm repurposes salon hair to absorb oil spills and pollution
Discarded human hair, gathered from beauty salons across Brazil, is being repurposed as an absorbent barrier against oil spills and water pollution, according to Africanews. The initiative transforms a common waste product into what its developers describe as an eco-friendly tool for tackling contamination in coastal bays and inland waterways.

In Brazil, where the hairdressing and cosmetics industry generates substantial volumes of leftover hair, collectors gather clippings that would otherwise end up in landfill sites. The collected material is packed into mesh booms or mats that can be laid along shorelines or floated around polluting vessels. When these barriers come into contact with oil, the hair traps hydrocarbons within its structure while allowing water to pass through.
The technique relies on the natural properties of keratin, the protein that makes up human hair. Keratin fibres repel water while attracting and binding oily substances, making hair an effective, low-cost alternative to synthetic absorbent pads, which often become contaminated waste themselves after a single use. Because hair is biodegradable, the used material can be disposed of with less long-term environmental impact than conventional clean-up products.
Brazil has faced repeated oil contamination along its Atlantic coastline in recent years, putting pressure on authorities and environmental groups to find scalable, affordable remediation methods. Conventional clean-up materials, such as polypropylene booms and chemical dispersants, carry their own environmental costs, which has prompted interest in simpler, natural alternatives.
The project also highlights an unusual link to Africa’s thriving hair market. Human hair is a major commodity in the production of wigs and weaves popular across the continent, generating significant waste at both ends of the supply chain. By treating discarded hair as a resource rather than refuse, the Brazilian initiative points to a circular-economy approach that could complement existing responses to smaller spills and routine harbour pollution, particularly in regions where conventional materials are costly or difficult to source.
