Aman Wole Gurmu Named CEO of Zambia Airways
Aman Wole Gurmu has been appointed chief executive officer of Zambia Airways, according to Borkena. The carrier, which has been working to re-establish itself as Zambia’s national airline after years of dormancy, named Gurmu to lead the next phase of its development.
Zambia Airways was originally established in 1964, shortly after the country gained independence from British colonial rule, and operated as the national flag carrier for three decades. The airline was grounded in the mid-1990s amid mounting financial losses, leaving Zambia without a state-backed carrier for an extended period. Successive administrations in Lusaka announced plans over the following decades to revive the brand.
In 2021, the Zambian government signed a partnership with Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier by fleet size, to relaunch Zambia Airways under a joint venture arrangement. Under the agreement, Ethiopian Airlines took a majority stake in the new entity and committed to providing technical, operational and management expertise. The revived airline has since resumed limited operations from Lusaka’s Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, focusing on regional routes across southern Africa.
The appointment of a new chief executive is widely seen as part of efforts to stabilise the airline and prepare it for further expansion. Zambia Airways is expected to play a growing role in connecting the southern African country to destinations across the continent and beyond.
