Nigerian academy urges renewed preparedness against future Ebola outbreaks

Working alongside international partners, Nigerian health authorities traced contacts, isolated patients and communicated openly with the public. The academy argued that the response infrastructure built during that episode — including designated isolation facilities, trained rapid-response teams and diagnostic laboratory capacity — must be maintained and regularly tested rather than left to erode between crises. Health authorities across West Africa continue to face overlapping infectious disease pressures, and the academy cautioned that complacency could leave Nigeria exposed should a new case be imported. Continental bodies, including the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, have similarly urged member states to treat outbreak preparedness as a standing obligation rather than an emergency reaction. For Nigeria, the academy’s message is that the hard-won lessons of 2014 remain as relevant as ever.
