KOICA Disburses $7.7 Million for District Hospital in Katembe, Maputo
The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has disbursed 7.7 million US dollars to support the construction of a district hospital in KaTembe, across Maputo Bay from the centre of Mozambique’s capital, according to AllAfrica, citing AIM, the Mozambican news agency.
KOICA is the development cooperation arm of the Republic of Korea, channelling official development assistance to partner countries through grants and technical cooperation. The agency operates in more than 100 countries, with health systems strengthening, rural development and education among its priority sectors. Mozambique has been a KOICA partner country for several years, receiving support for projects ranging from agricultural extension to public administration training.
KaTembe is one of the seven municipal districts of the city of Maputo, located on the southern shore of Maputo Bay and connected to the older city centre by the Maputo-Katembe bridge, which was completed in 2018. Since the bridge opened, KaTembe has been the focus of substantial urban expansion, including new housing developments and the relocation of government offices, which has significantly increased the district’s residential population and, with it, demand for public services.
Mozambique’s health system is organised around a network of health centres and district, provincial and central hospitals. District hospitals serve as the principal referral point for primary care facilities within their catchment area, handling cases that cannot be managed at the health-centre level. Building a new district hospital in a fast-growing area such as KaTembe therefore addresses a structural gap between population growth and healthcare infrastructure.
According to AllAfrica’s report, the funding released by KOICA is earmarked specifically for the construction phase of the hospital. The project forms part of a broader pattern of Korean development assistance to Mozambique, which has included earlier KOICA-supported initiatives in the health and governance sectors.
