Four Children Killed in Brutal Nursery School Attack in Kampala, Uganda

Uganda is reeling from a horrific security breach at a nursery school in Kampala, after a 39-year-old man allegedly entered the Gaba Early Childhood Development Centre, posed as a parent, and fatally stabbed four children aged between two and three years old. The attack, which occurred on Thursday, has sent shockwaves through the Ugandan capital and prompted a national conversation about child safety and the adequacy of security protocols at early childhood centres.

Police confirmed that the suspect, identified as Christopher Okello Onyum, was arrested at the scene following the attack. Officers said he gained entry to the facility by presenting himself as a guardian collecting a child. Once inside, he attacked the toddlers with a knife before being apprehended by staff and bystanders.

A Nation in Shock

President Yoweri Museveni issued a statement condemning the attack and ordering police to provide a full investigation within 48 hours. “The murder of innocent children is an attack on the soul of our nation,” the President said. “We will ensure the full weight of the law is brought against this individual.”

The attack has dominated social and mainstream media in Uganda, with parents queuing at hospitals seeking information about their children. Psychological support teams have been deployed to the school to assist surviving children and traumatised staff. The Uganda Police Force has ordered a review of security arrangements at all early childhood development centres in Kampala.

Investigations Underway

Police spokesman Fred Enanga told reporters that the motive behind the attack remains unknown and that the suspect has so far refused to cooperate with investigators. “We are pursuing all lines of inquiry, including the possibility of mental illness, personal grievances, or other motivations. The suspect is in our custody and will face the full process of the law.”

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the suspect had prior connections to the school, though no confirmed motive has been established as of the latest police briefing.

Broader Concerns About Child Safety

The Kampala attack is not an isolated incident in the region. In recent years, several African countries have seen violent incidents targeting children at schools, raising questions about the vulnerability of educational institutions to security threats. Child protection advocates are calling for mandatory background checks for all school staff and visitors, the installation of CCTV systems, and the establishment of emergency protocols for early childhood centres.

As Uganda buries its youngest victims, the grief is immense and the questions are urgent: how did this happen, and how can it be prevented? For now, the country mourns.
