Gunmen Kill Over 20 in Plateau State Community Attack

Gunmen attacked Binper community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria, killing more than 20 people and leaving several others injured, according to AllAfrica, which carried a report from Vanguard newspaper.

The attack adds to a long-running pattern of violence across Plateau State, which sits in Nigeria’s central Middle Belt and has been one of the country’s most persistent hotspots for communal unrest. Tensions in the region frequently run along ethnic and religious lines between farming and herding communities, and Mangu is among the local government areas that have repeatedly experienced deadly outbreaks over the years.

Plateau’s challenges are not new. The state capital, Jos, has been a focal point of recurring clashes since the early 2000s, and surrounding rural districts have been emptied by cycles of attack and counter-attack. Despite repeated deployments of security forces and government-led peace initiatives, including various local reconciliation panels, the violence has continued, with intermittent spikes drawing national attention.

Civil society groups and community leaders in Plateau have long urged authorities to address the root causes of the unrest, including disputes over land, grazing rights and identity, alongside calls for more effective policing in vulnerable rural areas. The latest incident in Binper, reported by Vanguard via AllAfrica, underscores how quickly such attacks can escalate even in communities that have previously escaped the worst of the violence.
