Wildlife experts in Kenya are pushing back against the theory that cyanide poisoning from agricultural pesticides caused the deaths of at least 20 elephants in recent weeks, according to FRANCE 24 correspondent Laurent Berstecher. The mysterious die-off has ignited a debate within the conservation community about what is really behind one of the country’s most troubling wildlife incidents in recent memory.

Initial reports pointed to cyanide as the likely cause, a method historically associated with poachers targeting elephants for their ivory in various parts of Africa. However, specialists cited by FRANCE 24 have questioned whether the evidence gathered so far supports that conclusion, urging caution before attributing blame to farming practices or poaching networks.

Kenya is home to one of Africa’s most important elephant populations, with major herds roaming ecosystems including the Amboseli plains, the Maasai Mara, and the vast Tsavo parks. Elephant numbers in Kenya have recovered significantly from the crisis levels seen in the late 2000s and early 2010s, when ivory poaching pushed some populations toward local extinction.
