Sidi-Ali, the spokesperson of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been named Nigeria’s Spokesperson of the Year, according to The Sun Nigeria.

The Central Bank of Nigeria is the country’s apex monetary authority, responsible for issuing the naira, formulating and implementing monetary policy, and supervising banks and other financial institutions. Established in 1958 and headquartered in Abuja, the CBN plays a central role in managing inflation, maintaining financial stability and regulating the country’s banking sector. Its decisions on interest rates, foreign-exchange policy and financial-sector reforms routinely shape the economic environment for Africa’s most populous nation, where more than 200 million people rely on the naira for daily transactions.

Effective communication has become an increasingly important part of that mandate. As the institution navigates sensitive policy decisions — from currency adjustments to banking-sector interventions — the spokesperson serves as the public face of the bank, explaining complex monetary measures to journalists, market participants and ordinary Nigerians.

Nigeria’s public institutions have faced growing pressure in recent years to communicate more transparently with citizens, particularly on economic matters that affect household budgets. Central-bank communications, in particular, have come under intense scrutiny during periods of currency volatility and rising prices, when monetary-policy announcements can have an immediate impact on the cost of food, fuel and imports. Spokespersons for financial regulators have therefore had to balance technical accuracy with the need to convey reassurance to a public that closely follows policy news.

The Spokesperson of the Year recognition highlights the growing professionalisation of corporate and institutional communications in Nigeria, where government bodies, regulators and private firms have invested in dedicated press teams to manage public messaging. Awards in this category are typically assessed by panels of communications professionals, media practitioners and public-relations bodies.
