Ten years after it first opened its doors, the Revolving Art Incubator is using its anniversary to look back at the artists and ideas that have passed through it, according to AllAfrica. Founded by Jumoke Sanwo at the Silverbird Galleria in Lagos, the initiative, known as RAI, was set up as an experimental platform for contemporary art in a city better known for commerce than for the visual arts.

Writing for This Day, critic Okechukwu Uwaezuoke reports that the 10th anniversary programme revisits the people, places and ideas associated with the incubator since its founding. The reporting, carried by AllAfrica, considers what remains of an art experiment a decade after it was first launched.

RAI’s home, the Silverbird Galleria on Victoria Island, is one of a small number of commercial and cultural venues that have given Lagos a sustained exhibition infrastructure in recent decades. The Galleria is part of the broader Silverbird Group, which is better known for cinema and broadcasting but has maintained a dedicated gallery space that has hosted exhibitions by emerging and established Nigerian artists. That backdrop has shaped RAI’s identity as an incubator rather than a conventional gallery: a place where artists, curators and audiences could encounter new work outside the formal auction and collector-driven circuits that dominate Africa’s top-end market.

The anniversary comes at a moment when several African cities, including Lagos, are competing to attract international fairs and foundations. For Uwaezuoke, the question the 10th year poses is less about milestones than about legacy — what endures of an art experiment once the anniversary lights are switched off.
