African Entrepreneurship Already Has the Talent for World-Class Firms, Says Priceline Co-Founder
Africa already possesses the talent required to build world-class companies, according to Jeff Hoffman, the entrepreneur who co-founded online travel platform Priceline and now chairs the Global Entrepreneurship Network. Speaking on the RootsToFoods Capital Series podcast, Hoffman argued that what the continent’s founders need most is not better raw material but better support systems around them.
Hoffman, who has spent decades building and backing technology businesses, told the podcast that entrepreneurs across Africa demonstrate the same drive and ingenuity found in any of the world’s leading startup hubs. The challenge, he said, has been access to the connective tissue that helps early-stage ventures grow into sustainable companies: experienced coaches who can guide first-time founders, reliable digital connectivity that links them to customers and markets, and capital that is willing to engage before writing a cheque.
Capital that “shows up ready to listen” was a recurring theme in the conversation, as AllAfrica reported. Hoffman suggested that investors who take the time to understand local context, consumer behaviour and regulatory environments tend to back more durable businesses than those who arrive with rigid playbooks written for other markets. Coaching and mentoring networks, in turn, can compress the learning curve for founders navigating unfamiliar legal, logistical and financial terrain.
The Global Entrepreneurship Network, which Hoffman chairs, runs programmes in more than 180 countries aimed at fostering local startup ecosystems through research, policy work and events such as Global Entrepreneurship Week. Africa has been a growing focus for the network, where rapid mobile-phone adoption, a young population and a widening base of angel investors have already produced a generation of founders competing on the international stage. Hoffman’s remarks suggest that the next phase will depend less on discovering new talent and more on building the institutions and relationships that allow that talent to scale.
