Nigerian delegation to attend Canada-Africa Summit in Toronto
A Nigerian delegation is set to join counterparts from across the African continent at the Canada-Africa Summit in Toronto, according to Premium Times Nigeria. The delegation, which includes Lawal and Sani alongside other officials, will represent Nigeria at the multilateral gathering convened to discuss cooperation between Canada and African states.
The Canada-Africa Summit has, in recent years, served as a forum where African governments engage Canadian policymakers, businesses and civil society on issues ranging from trade and investment to climate change, governance and security. Toronto, one of Canada’s largest financial and commercial centres, has previously hosted editions of the summit, drawing participants from African governments, diaspora networks and Canadian institutions.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country and largest economy by GDP, has historically engaged Canada through channels that include diplomatic dialogue, energy trade and educational exchanges. Canadian interests in Nigeria have centred on oil and gas, mining and a longstanding development assistance programme, while Nigerian students and professionals form one of the larger African diaspora communities in Canada.
As Premium Times Nigeria reported, the delegation’s participation underscores Abuja’s continued interest in diversifying its international partnerships beyond traditional Western allies and engaging with middle powers such as Canada on issues of mutual economic and diplomatic concern. The summit is expected to produce communiqués and partnership announcements across its working sessions.
Further details on the delegation’s composition, the topics on the Nigerian agenda and any bilateral meetings scheduled on the sidelines of the summit had not been disclosed at the time of reporting.
