Zamalek, MC Alger and Club Africain Lead North African Charge Into CAF Interclubs Season
North African football heavyweights Zamalek, MC Alger and Club Africain are preparing to lead the UNAF region’s challenge into the 2026/27 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, with clubs from across the region now turning their attention to Thursday’s continental draw.
The CAF interclub competitions bring together clubs from across the African continent, with the Champions League traditionally reserved for domestic league champions and the Confederation Cup featuring cup winners and additional qualifiers. The Union of North African Football Federations (UNAF), which groups the football associations of Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco, has historically been the most successful of CAF’s six regional groupings, its clubs having lifted the Champions League trophy far more often than any other bloc.
Zamalek, one of Egyptian football’s most storied clubs and the longtime rivals of Cairo neighbours Al Ahly, enter the new campaign with multiple CAF Champions League titles already to their name. MC Alger, based in the Algerian capital, will carry Algerian hopes into the draw after another strong domestic campaign. Club Africain, the historic Tunis-based outfit, complete the trio of UNAF standard-bearers highlighted by AllAfrica as the region’s clubs turn their focus to the continental stage.
The Thursday draw will map out the early path for the participating clubs, setting preliminary-round matchups and laying the groundwork for what organisers hope will be another competitive season of African club football.
