Suspected Boko Haram Fighter Arrested Over Attack on Army School in Yobe State
Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected Boko Haram fighter in connection with the attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School (NETTS) in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, according to AllAfrica, citing the Nigerian newspaper Leadership.
The arrest comes amid continuing military operations against insurgent groups in northeastern Nigeria, a region that has borne the brunt of more than fifteen years of jihadist violence. Yobe State, which borders Borno State and sits within the broader Lake Chad Basin, has remained one of the most heavily affected areas since Boko Haram launched its insurgency in 2009.
Buni Yadi itself has been a recurring flashpoint. In February 2014, suspected Boko Haram gunmen attacked the Government Girls Secondary School in the town, one of several assaults on educational institutions that drew international attention to the conflict and prompted a sustained regional security response. The town has since hosted military installations as Nigerian forces, working alongside partners in the Multinational Joint Task Force, have sought to push militants out of rural strongholds.
Yobe State authorities and military commanders have not publicly disclosed further details about the arrested suspect or the operational circumstances of the detention. The Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi is among the military facilities in the state that have featured in counter-insurgency operations.
Security conditions across the northeast have fluctuated over the years, with the military reporting territorial gains against Boko Haram and its splinter factions even as isolated attacks on military and civilian targets have continued. The arrest in Buni Yadi is likely to feed into ongoing intelligence-gathering and counter-terrorism efforts in the state.
