Nigeria’s state-owned oil company has launched another tender to sell its new Cawthorne crude grade, according to Businessfront.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), which manages the country’s hydrocarbon resources on behalf of the federal government, periodically invites international buyers to bid for cargoes of its various crude streams. The Cawthorne grade is among the newer additions to NNPC’s export portfolio, and the latest tender indicates ongoing efforts to establish the stream with international buyers.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest crude oil producer and a long-standing member of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The country’s export basket has traditionally centred on well-established light sweet grades such as Bonny Light, Qua Iboe and Forcados, which are prized by refiners in Europe, Asia and the Americas for their low sulphur content and relative ease of processing. Introducing additional grades such as Cawthorne is part of broader efforts to diversify offerings and respond to shifting demand from international buyers.

NNPC was restructured under the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021, which converted the former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation into the commercially oriented NNPC Limited. The reform was designed to attract private investment, improve transparency and reduce the state’s direct involvement in operational decision-making, while leaving the company in government ownership.

The issuance of repeat tenders for a newer crude grade typically reflects the seller’s efforts to gauge competitive pricing, build a reliable buyer base and smooth the logistics of loading and shipping. For traders, such tenders offer an entry point into one of the world’s most established oil export programmes.

NNPC’s continued marketing of the Cawthorne grade will be watched by traders monitoring the supply of West African light sweet crude.
