Mali’s Moussa Mara calls for unity after release from prison
Former Malian Prime Minister Moussa Mara has appealed for national unity, reconciliation and empathy in his first public message since completing a one-year prison sentence, according to Africanews. The opposition figure urged Malians to forgive one another and move forward together after his release.
Mara is a longstanding figure in Malian politics. A former head of the Rassemblement pour le Mali party, he served as Prime Minister between 2014 and 2017 under President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta and later ran as a presidential candidate in 2018. He has remained an active voice in opposition politics since leaving government.
Mali has been under military rule since a series of coups in 2020 and 2021 toppled the Keïta government and later the civilian transitional administration, leaving a junta led by Colonel Assimi Goïta in charge. The country has since faced growing international isolation, including the withdrawal of several Western partners and a reorientation of its security alliances toward Russia and the Wagner-linked Africa Corps. Against this backdrop, space for opposition figures and civic activism has narrowed considerably, with journalists, politicians and civil society activists detained in recent years.
In his message, Mara also raised concern over the disappearance of his lawyer, according to Africanews. The case has drawn attention in Bamako, where lawyers and rights groups have repeatedly flagged difficulties in securing legal representation for those detained on politically sensitive matters.
Reconciliation remains a sensitive theme in Malian public debate, where disputes over transitional justice, communal violence in the centre of the country and the future return to constitutional order continue to shape political life. Mara’s call for unity suggests he intends to resume a prominent role in that conversation.
