Kenya: Partial Closure of Mombasa Road Near Bellevue for Culvert Construction
Motorists using one of Nairobi’s busiest highways should expect traffic disruptions over the next five weeks after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced a temporary partial closure of Mombasa Road near Bellevue to facilitate culvert construction works, according to AllAfrica, citing Capital FM.
Mombasa Road is a major arterial route in the Kenyan capital, linking the central business district with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the southeast and continuing south toward the port city of Mombasa. The road carries a heavy daily volume of commuter, commercial, and freight traffic, and congestion along the corridor is a routine challenge for travellers heading in and out of the city centre, particularly during morning and evening peak hours.
KeNHA, the state corporation responsible for the management, development, and maintenance of national trunk roads across Kenya, routinely carries out infrastructure works on major highways to address drainage, surface deterioration, and structural concerns. Culvert works in particular are intended to improve stormwater management and reduce the risk of flooding on the carriageway during heavy rains, a recurring problem on sections of Mombasa Road.
The partial closure near Bellevue, an area along the highway south of the city centre, is expected to remain in place for approximately five weeks while construction is carried out. During that period, motorists are likely to face slower journeys and possible diversions. KeNHA has, in past projects on the same corridor, urged road users to plan ahead, observe temporary signage, and follow instructions from traffic marshals managing the work zone.
Drivers who regularly use the route are advised to allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes where possible until the works are completed.
